About Jamgon Kongtrul Lodrö Thaye

Jamgon Kongtrul Lodrö Thaye, the 1st Jamgon Kongtrul (1813–1899)

Birth and prophecy

Jamgon Kongtrul the Great, Lodrö Thaye (1813–1899), was born in the village of Rong-gyap in Derge, eastern Tibet. The coming of this master had been prophesied by the Buddha Shakyamuni in the Samadhiraja Sutra, and by Padmasambhava in many of his termas. His father was Tendzin Yungdrung of the royal Khyung clan, his mother the yogini Tashi Tso.

A non-sectarian education

From the age of five he studied the alphabet, and from about ten he began to study on an enormous scale and without sectarian bias, receiving teachings from masters of various traditions — among them Shechen Öntrul Thutob Namgyal, Situ Pema Nyinché Wangpo and Jamyang Khyentse Wangpo. He learned the common sciences — Sanskrit grammar, logic and epistemology, arts and crafts, medicine — and studied, reflected and meditated upon the Madhyamika, the Prajnaparamita, the Vinaya, the Abhidharmakosha and the tantras, from both the Kama and Terma of the old and new translation schools.

A life of transmission

He dedicated his whole life to teaching and spreading the Dharma, giving empowerments, instructions, advice and reading transmissions for sutra and mantra alike, without sectarian bias. At the age of eighty-seven his physical manifestation was absorbed into absolute space.

The Five Treasuries

With Jamyang Khyentse Wangpo he co-founded the non-sectarian movement in 19th-century Tibet, and he became the teacher of the 15th Karmapa Khakyab Dorje, to whom he gave the full Kagyu teachings. Master, scholar, writer, poet and artist, he authored and compiled more than a hundred volumes — the best known being the Five Treasuries: the Treasury of Kagyu Mantras, the Treasury of Key Instructions, the Treasury of Precious Termas, the Treasury of Vast Teachings and the Treasury of Knowledge.
